Issue # 18:  Stop Losses

In the stock trading industry there is something called a “Stop Loss.”  It is a pre-determined level where you will exit a trade if it does not work out your favor.  For example, if you buy a stock at $20.00 and you have a $3.00 “Stop Loss”, you will sell your stock if it falls to $17.00 regardless of what happens next.  The reason “Stop Losses” are employed is so that you can minimize the negative effect on your trading account; and you are still able to recover if you have winning trades thereafter. 

Here is a chart indicating what it takes to recover in the stock market.  Assume you have a $1000.00 account and you lose on your trade.  This chart will show you how much it takes to recover your loss in order to get back to $1000.00:

SUCCESS STORY

October 2002, After I watched the Ronnie's training video, I wanted buy some Tank-tops of the Metroflex Gym, the famous hardcore gym in the world.  Brian kindly replied to my inquire and that was the starting point to know Brian Dobson, the guide angel of the 6-times Mr. Olympia, Ronnie Coleman and the one of the best bodybuilding experts in the world. After the RCC VII 2003, Brian gave me many valuable advices about whole training and nutrition through internet, and encouraged me alot. I felt like I was Ronnie in the Video "The Unbelievable". After his long sincere support for a year, I made 164lb body, so I lost about 75lb, and got the best physique ever.  Thanks again Brian!

Not just bodybuilding, but also he led me to compound bow/hunting, I won 2 archery tournaments with his encouragement and have plans for bodybuilding competitions. He is my guide angel, mentor, and good brother.

The reason I bring this to your attention this week is to emphasize the need for having a pre-determined “line in the sand” from which you have a chance to recover if something doesn’t work in your favor.  In regards to weight training and exercise, here are some of the things you can do to set your “Stop Losses”:

• If you follow the recommended routine from your local personal trainer and you are not making progress, despite following all the recommendations perfectly, then give yourself no more than X weeks (example 6 to 8 weeks) before choosing a new trainer or getting a better program.

• Some of you may be in a job which produces such a degree of stress that your body’s cortisol (stress hormone) levels are so high that there is minimal chance for you to gain muscle and/or get lean.  Assuming you are using numerous recovery techniques properly (massage, sauna, meditation, relaxation, etc.) and you have the rest of your life in order, you may have to make a career change if your job makes you continue producing the high stress levels.  Again, consider giving yourself a fixed amount of time to determine if your current situation works for you; however if you let it continue onward for an indefinite period it will become MUCH harder to recover from the stress’ impact, just like the stock trading example I cited earlier.

• If you are going to eat junk food or have a “cheat meal”, limit it to a certain number of times per week.  Assuming you are eating 5-6 meals per day, you are eating 35-42 meals per week.  Limit the number of “cheat meals” to something small like 3-5 meals and you should be able to minimize any negative impact that the cheat meals do to your attempts to improve your physique.  Eating 10-20 cheat meals in a week is much more difficult because you have to spend much more time and energy simply to get back to where you were previously.

Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you have about “Stop Losses” and how they can be applied to your life in most situations.  Just remember that when something is not working in your favor, give it a reasonable amount of time (or money) to turn around; if it continues to be counter-productive, have your fixed “line in the sand” (Stop Loss) where you will make a change or exit a certain situation so that your time to recover is minimal!
