Issue # 19: International Aspirations
This week I received a newsletter from Asia. It was from a young competitor who has aspirations of becoming Mr. Olympia one day. For those of you on this list who are not familiar with the Mr. Olympia, it is the title bestowed on the best bodybuilder in the world who competes in the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB). Metroflex Gym member Ronnie Coleman won the Mr. Olympia eight times in a row, and is looking to regain his title this fall to win a record ninth Mr. Olympia. Branch Warren, also another Metroflex Gym member, has competed on the Mr. Olympia stage. So when a young athlete wants to compete and learn how to become Mr. Olympia one day, he came to the right spot! In a moment, I will post my reply to him. Please note that due to respecting the security & privacy of all of our Metroflex Gym family members (wherever they live!) I changed his country and other personal information. Everything else is exactly as I replied.
In the e-mail he referred to watching the Ronnie Coleman DVD's, citing terrific progress from the information in them. He is also in his early 20's, above six feet tall, and believes that he has the genetic structure for winning bodybuilding championships. To find out more about Ronnie Coleman and Branch Warren's DVD's please feel free to visit: http://www.metroflexgymtraining.com/links_videosanddvds.html

SUCCESS STORY
A lot of customers will be glad to get back to an "average" build, so I guess this might be good for business. I don't view myself as a bodybuilder yet, more of a body re-builder! But I am looking forward to another year and learning more along the way. My biggest problem was getting information without actually seeing it work. Discovering what is possible opened my mind to new hope. You had to show me what I could do to go past my limiting doubts. I have seen changes, and I want to move on to better gains. Metroflex Gym has been a place to find creative solutions to produce those gains.

Dear (competitor),
Thanks for writing and congratulations on your improvements in 2.5 years! That's a terrific gain just from watching Ronnie's DVD's!
To answer your Mr. Olympia question first: the likelihood of anyone actually winning the Mr. Olympia is extremely rare, and this is due to several factors:
1) You must be a genetic freak to walk on stage. Ronnie has phenomenal genetics and would look like a bodybuilder to the casual American if all he ever did was lift moderately once a month. He has the proportions, muscle belly depth, fiber twitching types, etc. to be a champion bodybuilder. Obviously he is not built to be a world-class marathon runner or Kentucky Derby horse jockey!
2) There is some great competition in the U.S. and around the world. At 6' 1" you will have to probably weigh 280-300 in the offseason to diet down for such an international contest.
3) The biggest one is that without the genetic gifts it is nearly impossible to compete one day at the Olympia, and please remember that politics play a huge role in bodybuilding now. You will have to be sponsored and sign a contract with a supplement company (or other company) before having a realistic chance. The industry was different when Dorian first appeared in the late 1980's/early 1990's, and supplement endorsements were important but not as much as they are now.
4) Also remember that athletes in any sport, once they turn 21 or 22, are subject to a host of challenges: politics in the sport (and sometimes national/international politics!), being tempted by women, forgetting to train according to your fundamentals, money problems, drug & alcohol use to overcome pain, gambling problems, homesickness due to traveling all over the country/world, forgetting that their sports are businesses, and not learning how to be "good for business", etc. Those are just a small sample of the challenges athletes at all levels of professional athletics and any sport where you get paid to perform.
5) Most Mr. Olympia competitors have to train for years before getting a chance to perform on stage. This is due not only to the years necessary to build a physique with muscle "maturity" and density, but since this is a business you will have to "pay your dues" because others in the sport have done so. This also drives many competitors out of their respective sports due to having to wait for "their turn."
My best advice to you when you say that you want to win the Mr. Olympia is to make sure that you understand your "Core" (underlying) reasons for wanting to win it, or at least appear on stage. I have included one of my free reports called "Three Simple Questions" and when you get down to the "core" motivation please feel free to write back.
If you are still dedicated to win the Olympia for what you consider to be worthwhile reasons, then you are welcome to get Brian's e-book. It sums up his 30+ years in the bodybuilding business. He has seen all of it (the good and bad of the sport) and he will
answer specific questions you have once you finish reading the e-book. If you do not want to spend the money, I understand. Just remember then to seek a mentor who has been around a long time and will prevent you from making the mistakes that so many aspiring bodybuilders do. A previous Mr. Olympia was once quoted (and I am paraphrasing as I don't have the direct quote in front of me) that if his competition had his dedication, education, and intensity that they would have blown him away since they had better genetics. You can do the same with guidance from those like Brian who have so much knowledge but the younger generation (18-25) forgets to seek their wisdom due to being arrogant.
Remember to focus on your true underlying motivation (after reading the free report), and become the best in (your country). You may be able to ensure yourself a wonderful career simply by being the best in (your country). Over time, you would be able to generate publicity and perhaps get an invitation to the Olympia if you are the best in (your country); but I don't know the IFBB's current rules for specific countries like (yours). Also get to know the IFBB people in (your country) if possible so that you are considered "good for business." In addition to becoming successful on stage, remember to autograph pictures for kids, find out how you can make the bodybuilding industry leaders in (your country) more money (or exposure, etc.) by remembering that all of this is now a business for you. In America there is an expression called "going the extra mile." It means that you do more than your colleagues do in order to achieve success in your goals.
Within reason, find out how you can be more than just a bodybuilder by helping the judges, promoters, and your national bodybuilding industry become more profitable and recognized. And stay away from the "dark side of the sport" such as male prostitution, pornography, etc. Sadly, it does exist and there is a market for it worldwide.
I wish you all the best in your pursuits and I hope that you become your country's national champion with the information you get from Metroflex Gym!
Regards,
Matt
