Issue # 37: How To Eat Healty Fast Food
Some of you asked us about how to eat healthy when you are on the road, traveling between meetings in town, or otherwise pressed for time and not having a lot of choice on how to eat. You may have forgotten to pack your food in the morning; or you may have returned late from travel and didn't have time cook healthy food in bulk over the weekend. Not to worry -- we have some solutions for you!

SUCCESS STORY
Dear Brian
My name is Armando Romas, from Coahuila, Mexico. I started bodybuilding 2 years ago. I was very confused about the right nutrition and training I should be following to reach my goals. I wanted to be bigger and leaner. During one year and a half, I was doing everything that I read or listened to in magazines, books, Internet or some local, self-called "GURU". I made gains, yes, but a LOT of body fat too.
That was the case until I saw the Ronnie Coleman’s video "The Unbelievable." Then I knew the most FREAKY Bodybuilder in the world and his angel, Brian Dobson. I sent an email to Brian asking for help. He answered my email (very kind). He made me a right diet and workout and I started to burn a LOT of ugly body fat and I start to look GOOD! At this point I have plans to COMPETE in a local bodybuilding show!
I am very happy with my body enhancement, in my gym all the guys are so impressed with my look (more vascular and leaner) and my STRENGTH - without Brian Dobson, all my efforts would be a waste of time.
I'll keep listening to all his advice and building a FREAKY PHYSIQUE.

If you are traveling between meetings and need to eat fast food, at least you can now make informed choices. While you may have a pretty good guess as to which foods are the healthiest choices (e.g. grilled chicken breasts and salads with minimal dressing), consider taking a look at these websites to give yourself a potentially surprising breakdown of the fast food choices with which you may be familiar. Remember also to consider the levels of sodium, SATURATED fats (and trans fats), and chemicals added to any of these foods. Here are the websites:

You can even load these websites into your PDA or cell phone's internet browser (assuming the sites are PDA/cell phone browser-compatible). This is so that you have the websites with you when on the road and/or pressed for time!
Let's say that you do not want to eat at a fast food establishment, but you only have 20 minutes before your next meeting. Here are some suggestions if you do not have a cafeteria at your workplace:

Go a local supermarket and get a sandwich made at the counter, assuming they offer custom-made sandwiches. Go for lean meats, whole grain breads, and lots of vegetables. Go light on the cheeses and dressings!

Go to the grocery store and pick up some fruits which you can tolerate (e.g. bananas, berries, apples) and a lean protein source which you do not have to cook. Some examples of the protein would be cottage cheese, grilled chicken (cold), and roast beef cold cuts. Try to stay away from the more "processed" lunch meats if you have healthier choices available. Also grab some bottled water if you do not have water with you. Keep the sugary drinks to a minimum!

Stop by one of the many sandwich-type places located near many office buildings. Again, stick with the lean protein/whole grain/lots of vegetables sandwiches.

If all you have available for your time constraints is a local pharmacy, get a protein bar with a low amount of sugar (and sugar alcohols), any whole grain snacks they have in the "snacks section," and a bottle of water. It may not be much, but it may help you stay on track before you get home where you can get back to cooking healthy foods in bulk.
We hope that these suggestions help you when you are pressed for time yet still want to eat healthy "fast" food!
