Issue # 20: Common Themes Of Those Who Do Not Exercise
This week I had to travel to New York from Dallas to attend the annual expo/conference on software for securities professionals. During my times in the various airports, walking the streets of New York from Grand Central Station to the hotel, at the conference, and on the trains & subways in New York I noticed that many people were reading magazines or talking to friends about their outward appearances or their health status. The majority of them had the outward appearance of being out of shape (not indicating that they were; I am simply commenting on the initial impressions they made) and they had the look of longing for what they saw in the magazines.
I had the opportunity to talk with a few colleagues about this after they brought up the subject and I told them that I co-authored the Metroflex Gym e-book, and I will have additional e-books coming out for those who may not yet be inspired to lift weights. Assuming that they do not have any physiological concerns or significant injuries, they still refrained from considering weight training despite the fact that it would do them so much good.
In a moment, I will share with you the common themes I observed during these conversations; and I will give you some quick ways to overcome them if you happen to share their hesitancy.

SUCCESS STORY
Thank you for showing me the true meaning of being an iron warrior. You workout plan and support helped me bring up some of my weak points on stage. Metroflex Gym is the true meaning of hardcore. I only wish I lived closer so I could work with Brian on a daily basis because he has the tools to bring me to the next level.

The common themes I observed were:
1) A belief which is completely false. Training using Metroflex's methods will not make them into Ronnie Coleman as the odds are that they don't have Ronnie's genetics, appetite (!), motivation to win a bodybuilding contest, or ability to lift the huge amounts of weight. This was the one excuse I heard time & again which is mainly a "cop-out." Brian and the trainers at Metroflex have helped people from all ages improve their physiques and health. This is what a good trainer does, as his or her main interest should be to focus on the client and help that client improve more than they could on their own. The money and referrals will come quickly once the results are apparent. Evidently, some of my colleagues had trainers who were never taught that lesson!
2) Lack of knowledge. They all knew about weight training and the merits of training properly, but many had poor experiences with their personal trainers. A few questions later I could tell immediately that their trainers were not seasoned experts who have years of expertise and a successful track record. The testimonials on the main MetroflexGymTraining.com page and the "Testimonials" link are just a small sample of the people who have received benefit from Metroflex Gym.
3) Lack of motivation. This is the BIG one. Most people know what to do or where to get good information. While I am biased toward Metroflex Gym because I think that Brian offers tremendous information plus his gym offers inspiration you can't find just about anywhere else, I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge that many people have acquired great physiques with other training systems. Therefore many people have good information which can work. What they don't have is motivation, inspiration, or simple FUN when it comes to exercising.
In a future newsletter I will cover more of the ways to have fun while exercising, as all it takes is a little ingenuity if you are not motivated yet. This also applies to all of you who ARE motivated, yet you have friends & family who are not as passionate about fitness & exercise as you are. There are ways you can motivate them with positive motivation rather than threats or "fear of loss" motivation techniques. I cite those last two types as not being proper because exercising & fitness, by nature, are designed to be lifelong activities.
Fear, threats, being motivated by loss, etc. are all short-term motivations and should only be used as "catalysts" to get people to finally start exercising properly. These short-term techniques should be employed only as a last resort as they can be misused. For example, if you have a sibling who should exercise but currently does not, and you threaten them in order to get them to exercise, chances are they will start exercising. The danger with this is that it is easy for you to continue to use threats because they worked previously when other techniques did not work, even though they will be more damaging in the future. All you have to do is look at the lack of motivation of the employees in companies whose bosses use these tactics, such as threats, every day. The downside in such techniques is much greater than the upside.
So please do whatever you can to use positive motivation techniques if you have people you want to start exercising. For an idea about how to have some fun getting others to exercise, go back to the web page where you can download the free reports. Download the "Aces High Workout" which is a fun way to exercise, can be done anywhere, and you only need a deck of cards!
