Issue # 22:  Supplements And Persuasion Writing

Supplements are still one of the most frequent questions we get from those who haven't been involved with weight training for a long time.  Whether a woman writes and wants to slim down or a guy writes and wants to get bigger, most people write us to ask about supplements.  In the Metroflex Gym Down-To-Earth Guide you may have read how Brian acknowledges supplements, but the ones he has his clients primarily use are those relating to getting extra protein as most people do not eat enough to get the lean muscle they crave.  Any other supplements above the basics are for later in their journeys.  This assumes that everyone is training properly, with intensity and passion, and has the rest of their fitness habits in order.  If you are unsure of your current fitness habits, e-mail us or go back to the free report page to download some of the reports which address all that you need to do.

If you have ever studied business writing, sales copywriting, or other persuasion writing techniques you will have most likely read (or read about) Robert Cialdini's book, "Influence."  He studied the underlying psychological factors of why people are influenced to spend money, time, and energy when the products or services may not be in the best interests of those whom are paying.  It is a fascinating read, and it will help you if you feel that you are inundated by the supplement advertisements in the bodybuilding, fitness, fashion, and lifestyle magazines plus commercials you hear on the radio or see on television.

While he did not coin this phrase, some in the persuasion marketing circle have called one particular persuasion technique the "Cialdini Principle."  It is a three-dimensional persuasion technique based off of Cialdini's work; and people may use it on you, inadvertently, all the time.  Basically it goes like this:

1)  A third-party authority source is cited/quoted/referenced and you are unable to refute this claim during the time you are being persuaded
2)  A "friend" or other person is cited as having received some benefit from the product, service, etc.  This is where celebrity endorsers come into play during supplement ads, infomercials, or during bodybuilding expos.  Again, you most likely cannot refute their claims during the time you are being persuaded.
3)  The "First Person-Second Person" shift.  This is where the ad says, "We (first person) think that you (second person) should give XYZ a try..."

In # 1, the third-party authority could be a medical journal, a magazine, a newspaper, a TV show, a scientific study (watch out for these in the ads as you are unsure who paid to conduct them), etc.  In # 2, the friend (or endorser) would say something like, "When I used XYZ supplement I gained 20 pounds of muscle, lost 30 pounds of fat, my hair grew back, my kids stopped crying all night long, three members of the opposite sex gave me very nice compliments, and I won the lottery!"  In # 3, the First Person-Second Person "shift" could be, "We think if you tried XYZ supplement you will (list a benefit here:  look great, add muscle, lose weight, be considered "hot" for the first time, etc.)." 

While there are legitimate supplements out there which can help you with your goals, remember that they are there to "SUPPLEMENT" your training and assume that you have your fitness habits in order.  PLEASE get those in order before spending any money on supplements as eating healthy meals, training properly, drinking water, getting your life and goals in great shape, and staying healthy are FAR more vital to achieving your goals than any supplements out there!  Once you have them in order, do your research and really determine what is best for you.  Then talk with your doctor and/or licensed nutritionist about adding supplements as they may not react well for your body, blood type, previous medical history, etc.  This is even if everyone else taking XYZ has their fitness lives in order and is making great progress with XYZ.
